Before Be There When I Return became a memoir about resilience, second chances, and rebuilding life after epilepsy…

There was a love story already being written.

In 1993, while living in Los Angeles, I wrote a song called My Love Is Just a Step Away for a woman I was dating, hoping it might convince her to believe in our future together.

A photo of that original song appears on Page 49 of my memoir.

When Donnita read it, she cried.

Still… she made me wait another year.

In 1994, she said yes.

More than thirty years later, I finally recorded the two versions I always heard in my head:

• A romantic wedding-ready ballad

• A high-energy country rock version

The song that once asked a question…became the soundtrack to a lifetime together.
